Musikal Roots was created to serve the Chico community alongside the studio, Music to Grow. Together our two studios aim to offer a wide spread of Musikgarten classes for children between ages 0-9.
Certified Musikgarten Program
Welcome! I am Laurajean Burnside, and I am excited to serve little ones and their caregivers. The Musikgarten experience introduces children to the exciting, beautiful, and joyful world of music. As a certified **Musikgarten** instructor, I have been trained on how music interacts with early childhood physical and cognitive development.
I started Musikal Roots to complement and work alongside the local studio Music to Grow run by Jill Lundberg. There is a great need for more children's musical classes for the greater Chico area and my greatest hope is to create more opportunity.
My classes are hosted in a shared studio with Music to Grow and my clientele is shared. The studio is located at 2801 Notre Dame Blvd. in Chico, CA 95928. I keep my groups small, friendly, and fully focused on group play, parent-child connection, and creative confidence all while learning and laying musical roots.

Musikgarten is the leader in early childhood music education — for children and teachers. Musikgarten offers a complete multi-year educational program that helps infants, toddlers, and children develop a deep love of music and the ability to express it. We have wonderful CDs of the songs sung in class, age-appropriate instruments, and parent guidebooks. These home materials reinforce lessons and involve the whole family in the fun.
Musikgarten trains teachers throughout the United States and Canada on how to guide infants, toddlers, and children in developing a love of music with the Musikgarten advantage.
Musikgarten demonstrates the many benefits children gain by taking part in its music and movement program—encompassing musical, physical, emotional, social, and cognitive growth. Musikgarten shows teachers how to use the Musikgarten curricula to support the learning process.
At Musikgarten, nature is included as part of the classroom. Musikgarten believes in the benefits of teaching children to value and respect the natural environment. Even its products and packaging are environmentally conscious.
Today, there are hundreds of Musikgarten studios in North America. Additionally, the Musikgarten curricula have been adapted and are used extensively in several foreign countries, including Germany, Malaysia, Korea, China, Austria, Switzerland, South Africa, New Zealand, and Taiwan.
I believe Musikgarten has no equal.
Musikgarten's early childhood program is expertly planned, executed, and supported. Musikgarten teachers enjoy their studios. And students, well, they just seem to love coming to Musikgarten.
Musikgarten offers instruction which is just right for each age level—from your baby who benefits greatly from being part of a live music environment, right up through school-age children who delight in group piano classes.
Beginning simply with singing, moving, and exploring rhythm instruments, levels of complexity are added as children grow. Children coming through the Musikgarten program inherently "know" the music they eventually play in later years.
Music and movement have dramatic effects on babies, toddlers, and older children. Studies indicate early music instruction positively impacts language and literacy development; others point to improved pattern recognition skills which are the basis for mathematical learning; still others reveal the social and emotional benefits of being involved in music.
Musikgarten's expertly trained and well-supported teachers combine a love of music and an understanding of children and the way they learn into lessons that children and their families love, using folk music and fun activities.
Musikgarten's founders have been involved in early childhood music education since before it was recognized. Dr. Lorna Lutz Heyge has been developing early childhood music curricula for more than 30 years, while Audrey Sillick has been training early childhood educators for 40 years.
Embracing the natural world is part of the Musikgarten advantage. Musikgarten works very hard to keep packaging minimal, desiring to get materials into students' hands, and to give them a place to keep all pieces together.
Some family packets—including instruments made of natural fibers—even come in cotton cloth bags, which are beautiful, durable, and reusable.
All Musikgarten products and training are reasonably priced, making them accessible and affordable for everyone. I believe high-quality developmental foundation learning should be within reach for all families.
Musikal Roots & Music to Grow share a studio space & clientele.
